Fibre in new developments
The Australian Government wants fibre infrastructure installed in new developments. Providing property buyers early access to the benefits of next-generation broadband.
Recently the Federal Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Infrastructure, announced changes to the arrangements for providing fibre to new developments and these changes are effective immediately.
The following briefly describes the roles and responsibilities in new developments;
- NBN Co is responsible as fibre provider of last resort for developments of 100 or more lots or units that receive planning approval after 1 Jan 2011.
- Telstra is responsible as provider of last resort for developments of less than 100 lost or units approved after 1 Jan 2011, pending NBN Co rolling our fibre; and,
- Telstra is also responsible as provider of last resort for developments approved before 1 Jan 2011 and still awaiting infrastructure.
